The Korean carmaker registered a strong sale of 38,016 units in India while the export numbers dipped by a sweeping 37.9 per cent.
Riding on the back of the success of its best-seller
Elite i20 and the compact SUV Creta, Hyundai has posted a 9.3 per cent
y-o-y domestic growth for the month of January. While the sales for
Hyundai India have gone up in the first month of the year, the
cumulative figures for the Korean manufacturer have gone down as a
result of the y-o-y deficiency in its exports.
The largest passenger car
exporter in India registered domestic sales of 38,016 units in January
2016 as compared to 34,780 units sold in January 2015. However, there is
a stark contrast in the export figures from last year with a drastic
37.9 per cent fall from 10,003 to 6,214 units this year. The fall in
exports clearly affected the cumulative figures that witnessed a slight
negative of 1.2 per cent. The overall figures for Hyundai in India for
January stood at 44,230 against 44,783 units sold by the company last
year.
The downfall in exports was a result of the
production challenges being faced by the Chennai plant of the Korean
automaker. The impact of the floods is yet to fade away while the
production capacity of the plant is also unable to meet global demands.
The manufacturer is set to expand its production facilities in India to
cease the fall in its numbers.
With the Auto Expo also approaching,
speculations are also rife about the new cars that Hyundai could roll
out for India. The Tucson will definitely be a headline grabber while an
MPV might also be on the cards.
Commenting on the January figures, Rakesh
Srivastava, Sr. Vice President Sales and Marketing, Hyundai Motor India
Ltd., said, “Hyundai started the year with a positive note registering
the domestic volume of 38,016 units with a growth of 9.3% over last
year. The growth momentum of last year continued built by strong
performance of products like Grand, Creta & i20 Elite/Active.”
We look forward to presenting the Hyundai Experience
at the Auto Expo through our products & technology towards meeting
the growing aspirations of the Customers,” he added.
