While almost every car manufacturer offers a 24X7 road-side assistance facility that you can use in case you get a flat tyre, it might be a good idea to know yourself, how to replace a flat tyre. If a tyre is flat, you can tell it through visual inspection while the car is parked. However, in case if it goes flat while driving, you would feel that the steering has become heavier to operate (in case it’s any of the front tyres) or the car might start pulling towards one direction in case the tyre at the rear is flat. You might also experience abnormal vibration depending upon the air that has already leaked through the tyre.
In case you experience any of the symptoms while driving, it’s important that you park the car immediately along the closest kerb and do an inspection. This would prevent damage to the tyre and wheel. A visual check and comparison would surely reveal if a tyre is flat or not.
After ascertaining that the tyre is flat, you can follow the steps below to change the flat tyre with the spare one.
REMOVE THE FLAT TYRE
- Mark sure that you park the car on a flat and levelled ground to prevent rolling. Also, ascertain that the ground is not soggy and is sufficiently hard. Jack deployed on a loose surface can cause the jack to sink under the weight of car.
- Take out the wheel brace, jack, spare wheel and emergency kit. Deploy the supplied reflective triangle as a warning sign for oncoming traffic and ask the passengers to stay out of the vehicle before removing the flat tyre.
- Apply parking brake and put the car in first or reverse gear. If the car has an automatic gearbox, keep the car in “Park” position with handbrakes on.
- Use the wheel brace to loosen all the nuts in counter clockwise direction. Just loosen them enough and not all the way through. This necessarily needs to be done before putting the jack since the friction between the tyres and tarmac is necessary to loosen the nuts of the flat tyre.
- Place the jack under the car body, near the tyre that you need to replace. Most manufacturers put a marking. If you can’t find that, put the jack in position where it looks secure and is perpendicular to the ground.
- Raise the jack until it starts to touch the body and starts lifting the car.
- Turn the nuts all the way through and remove them all. Subsequently remove the wheel and put it under the car body.
PUT THE NEW WHEEL IN PLACE
- Put the new wheel in place along with nuts and tighten them all in crisscross fashion. Turn them gently using hands and wheel brace with just enough force to make them snug but not enough to upset the jack and car.
- Lower the jack and remove it. Now tighten the nuts in crisscross fashion and secure the wheel firmly.
- Note that it would take a lot of force to break the nuts free. Therefore, tighten all the nuts with all your might without worrying about damaging the nuts.
